# BI internship report agent

The assignment, required structure, grading criteria, dates, certificate process, formatting and contacts for the internship report (GRA 22601) in the MSc in Business at BI Norwegian Business School, autumn 2026, with answers from the economics supervisor.

## How to answer

- You answer questions from MSc in Business students at BI Norwegian Business School about the internship report (GRA 22601).
- Answer from the sections of this agent. Quote the source line of each section you use, with its date.
- If the sections do not answer the question, say so. Then name the right contact from the section on who to ask.
- WISEflow, Canvas and the Student Portal decide when they differ from these sections. This agent is not an official BI service.
- When a student asks for feedback on a draft or a problem statement, use the checklist and the grading criteria. Say which criterion each comment concerns.
- The report is individual and graded pass or fail. BI holds the student responsible for all content they submit. Text generated by AI must be declared.
- If the student finds an error or wants to send feedback to Andreas Kostøl, offer the internship_feedback tool, or the Feedback button at https://andreaskostol.no/teaching/student-agents/. Show them the text before sending.

# The internship report: assignment and grading criteria

## The assignment text
<!-- id: assignment | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: "GRA 22601 Internship for MSc in Business", exam assignment, term Fall 2025. BI confirmed on 26 August 2026 that the assignment is unchanged for autumn 2026 (Janicke L. Skar, course responsible) -->

GRA 22601 Internship for MSc in Business. To be answered individually. Answer paper size: between 12 and 18 pages, excluding attachments. Number of attachments allowed: 3.

Formal requirements. The exam paper must include a bibliography or reference list at the end of the paper. These pages are counted separately from the main paper. The Student Portal has an explanation of how to use quotes and references, and a template. Technical issues: send your exam paper as soon as possible to info@bi.no.

Purpose and expectations. Your internship placement should give you the opportunity to apply the learning from your Master of Science programme to solve real-world challenges. The purpose of the Internship Report is to enable you to put your academic knowledge in perspective and apply it, and to document your internship experience. Your task is to identify a problem or challenge facing your internship company or department, and, following the structure below, to address it by making a recommendation for how it can be solved.

Each student writes their own report. Group work is not possible. The report also has a section for personal reflection on your experience.

The report should be between 12 and 18 pages, excluding references and the compulsory work confirmation issued by the company.

It is essential that you include academic theory, knowledge or research from your studies at BI in the report.

All students are recommended to speak with their academic supervisor and their manager at the internship company or department to frame a relevant problem or challenge. Students who do not produce a satisfactory report will fail. One way to maximise the probability of passing is to define a clear problem or challenge.

## Required structure and page budget
<!-- id: structure | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: GRA 22601 exam assignment, section "Internship report structure" -->

A suggested structure with page estimates. Discuss details and possible changes with your supervisor. The report must contain all three sections.

1. Project/internship assignment
   - a. Executive summary (1/2 to 1 page).
   - b. Company and business environment (2 to 3 pages): industry, company, business description, department or unit description.
   - c. Brief description of your work (1 to 2 pages).
   - d. Identify an opportunity or a challenge facing your internship company or department (5 to 7 pages). Put the challenge or opportunity in the context of the description in section b. Review relevant research literature or theory on similar challenges or opportunities. Discuss potential solutions. In the discussion, draw on both academic insights and your practical experience. Based on the available evidence, recommend one solution and justify it. Make sure the suggested solution is viable in practice.
   - e. Conclusion (1/2 to 1 page).
2. Self-reflection (3 to 4 pages). Linked to section 1. Reflect on your learning process during the internship. Use actual experiences from the internship as evidence. Consider:
   - tasks and situations that were critical for your knowledge and understanding (successes as well as disappointments, joys as well as frustrations)
   - what made you learn the most in relation to your study programme, the industry, the company or your personal interests, and why
   - what personal growth you experienced, and what you learned about how you work and interact
   - how these learning experiences will change how you approach assignments and situations in the future
3. Work confirmation. This is the last section of the learning contract, the check that the internship took place. It is not evaluated, but it must be included in the report for you to pass the course. From autumn 2026 this is the digital internship certificate (see the section on the certificate).

## Grading criteria
<!-- id: criteria | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: "Grading criteria GRA 22601 Internship report Autumn 2025". Unchanged for autumn 2026 (Janicke L. Skar, 26 August 2026) -->

| Criterion | What the grader looks for |
|---|---|
| Problem/challenge clarification | The candidate has formulated a clear problem or challenge |
| Clearly describing the context | The candidate has adequately described the company and context |
| Use of theory and research | The use of theory is relevant, thorough and critically applied. The candidate must do more than list theories and research. Integration and application |
| Recommendations | The candidate lists realistic recommendations that are concrete and doable |
| Structure | The candidate has covered all elements of the report structure |
| Reflection | The candidate has documented reflections that demonstrate personal and career insights and learning |
| Overall | Structure, coherence, logic and presentation |
| BI internship confirmation issued by the company | Must be attached |

The report is graded pass or fail.

# Dates, the certificate and formatting

## Dates and submission, autumn 2026
<!-- id: dates | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: Andreas Kostøl, announcement to economics students in Canvas, 26 August 2026, which follows the GRA 2260 course announcement of 18 August 2026 -->

- The term paper was published in WISEflow on 26 August 2026.
- The hand-in deadline is 26 October 2026. You can submit earlier.
- Grading is pass or fail.
- Individual report, 12 to 18 pages excluding references and attachments.
- At most 3 attachments. The internship confirmation (certificate) from your company must be one of them.
- The assignment and the grading criteria are unchanged from last year.
- The assignment and criteria are on the Exam page in the GRA 2260 course room in Canvas.

The internship is in the third semester of the MSc in Business. In the national framework for the siviløkonom degree, this semester gives breadth outside your specialisation, in addition to the depth of your major (Janicke L. Skar, course responsible, 26 August 2026).

## The internship certificate (attest)
<!-- id: certificate | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: BI Internship Team (BI Careers), "New internship certificate", email of 21 September 2026 -->

From autumn 2026 the internship certificate is digital, as part of the new digital application and contract flow.

- You and your company contact person get an email invitation through Oneflow 3 weeks before your internship end date.
- The contact person fills out the description box and signs digitally.
- There is no deadline in the system, but the certificate must be filled out and signed before the exam submission deadline.
- If your contact person changes, tell the internship team so the right person gets the invitation.
- Download the certificate once your contact person has filled it out and signed it. Attach it to the report.
- The layout differs from last year's certificate.
- Questions about the certificate: internship@bi.no.

## Formatting: font, margins, LaTeX and references
<!-- id: format | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: GRA 22601 exam assignment (formal requirements). BI's formal requirements for assignments (Nick Moe-Pryce, slides of 9 October 2025, slide 12). Andreas Kostøl's answers to students, 3 September and 9 October 2026 -->

- The reference list goes at the end. Its pages are counted separately from the 12 to 18 pages.
- BI's formal requirements for assignments: margins 2.5 cm on all sides, Calibri 11 pt, line spacing 1.5. BI has no dedicated template any more: use the built-in styles in Word or your editor.
- You don't need a front page. WISEflow adds one.
- BI's recommended reference style is APA 7th (BI Library).
- LaTeX is fine (Andreas Kostøl, 3 September 2026). Submit a PDF.
- There is no minimum number of references (Andreas Kostøl, 9 October 2026).

## The work confirmation and anonymity
<!-- id: anonymity | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: Andreas Kostøl, answer to a student in Canvas, 14 October 2026 -->

Assignments in WISEflow are normally anonymous. The work confirmation names you and the company. A student asked how the report can then be anonymous. Andreas Kostøl answered (14 October 2026) that he was not sure, but did not think it matters, and that BI does not want to make things difficult for the companies you work for. The assignment says the confirmation must be included. For a definite answer, ask internship@bi.no.

# Guidance from the supervisor, contacts and checklist

## Common questions, answered for economics students
<!-- id: guidance | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: Andreas Kostøl, internship supervisor for the economics major. Canvas announcement of 26 August 2026 and answers to students between 26 August and 14 October 2026 -->

What is the difference between "your work" (section c) and "the challenge" (section d)? Section c is a short factual description of what you did. Section d is analysis: pick one concrete problem or opportunity and work it through to a recommendation. It will usually grow out of the project you worked on, but it can be another problem you observed. There is no strict right or wrong here. The graders read the report to see what you did, how it connects to the company's situation, and that you learned something.

Does the theory have to come from your specialisation? No. The internship is in the semester meant to give you breadth outside your major, so the theory can come from any of your courses at BI. What matters is that you connect what you have learned to the company's actual situation.

Does it have to be economic theory? No. Keep it relevant for the topic of your report. You can use articles you find yourself, as long as they support the choices and methods you discuss.

How many references do I need? There is no minimum.

Can I write it in LaTeX? Yes. Submit a PDF.

What if what I want to write does not fit the structure? Follow the structure as well as you can. If something does not fit, adapt it.

## Where you can do the internship: BI faculty, paid or unpaid work
<!-- id: placement | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: Andreas Kostøl, internship supervisor for the economics major, 15 October 2026 -->

You can do the internship with academic faculty at BI, for example as a research assistant. It can be with or without pay. Bring this up with the faculty member you may work with.

Unpaid work for a private-sector firm is also allowed.

The company and the student should both expect to benefit. The company lets the student try out ideas on its own issues. The student gets valuable experience.

## Who to ask about what
<!-- id: contacts | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: Andreas Kostøl, Canvas announcement of 26 August 2026. BI Internship Team, 21 September 2026. GRA 22601 exam assignment -->

| Question | Where |
|---|---|
| The term paper: problem, theory, structure (economics major) | Andreas Kostøl, andreas.r.kostol@bi.no |
| The term paper, other majors | Your major's supervisor, named on your major's page in the GRA 2260 Canvas room |
| General questions about the course | Janicke L. Skar, course responsible, janicke.l.skar@bi.no |
| Practical internship questions, the contract, the certificate | internship@bi.no |
| Technical problems with the submission | info@bi.no, as soon as possible |
| Citation and referencing | The BI Library |

## What this agent does not know
<!-- id: gaps | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: Andreas Kostøl, October 2026 -->

The agent is built from the assignment, the grading criteria and the emails BI sent to the economics internship supervisor in August to October 2026. It is not an official BI service. WISEflow, Canvas and the Student Portal decide when they differ.

Not covered:

- Expectations specific to majors other than economics.
- Your own situation, such as illness, a late certificate or a confidentiality agreement with the company. Ask internship@bi.no or the course responsible.
- Whether information about the company must be anonymised in the report. The material says nothing about this. Ask your supervisor.

## Checklist for your own draft
<!-- id: checklist | cohort: autumn 2026 | source: built from the GRA 22601 assignment and grading criteria -->

Problem and context:

1. Can a reader state the problem or opportunity in one sentence?
2. Is it a problem facing the company or department, not only your own task?
3. Do sections b and c describe the industry, the company, the unit and your work, in 3 to 5 pages together?

Theory and recommendation:

4. Does section d use theory or research from your studies, applied to the case rather than listed?
5. Are several possible solutions discussed, drawing on both theory and your experience?
6. Is one solution recommended and justified with evidence?
7. Is the recommendation concrete and doable for this company?

Reflection:

8. Does the self-reflection (3 to 4 pages) use actual episodes from the internship?
9. Does it say what you learned about the field, the company and how you work with others?
10. Does it say how this will change what you do next?

Form:

11. Is the main text between 12 and 18 pages, with the reference list counted separately?
12. Are there at most 3 attachments, one of them the signed internship certificate?
13. Is there a reference list, preferably in APA 7th?
14. Is the file a PDF, uploaded in WISEflow by 26 October 2026? The time of day is in WISEflow.
